    Going Through Security

i haven't flown in a while. i've heard that you can choose to go through a "pat down" instead of going through the screener machine. is one choice any better than the other?

it's always best to get to the airport early though, saves the rushing and anxiety i think (at least it did for me!). my husband argued with one of the security guys because he didn't want to go to the screener. you're not required to go through it, you can request to be pat down instead. i've been through both and haven't had problems.

i wouldn't go through the scanner. the trouble is that when you request to go through the pat down, they tend to take offence and try and make an example of you. they can hold you up, and be rougher with your stuff-they have a real bad rep right now.

yes, you can opt for the pat down instead of the screener. the pat down is more invasive of personal space, but at least there is no radiation risk. it really seems to be a pick your poison scenario.

i've been pulled aside a few times and made to go into the full body scanner. it's not so much the radiation that i'm concerned about it's the having someone peep through my clothes that makes me feel a bit ill. i guess this is the price i pay for enjoying travel to the middle-east.

i've never been scanned. i've only ever had to go through the metal detector. i looked at pictures of what the body scan looks like and it's almost like looking at someone nekkid! i don't feel good about that at all. i think i'd rather have the pat down than have someone peeping through my clothes.

yeah, ugh. i never liked the idea of someone having x-ray naked pictures of me, either. is this what the screeners see when you walk-through? i've never been able to see what they can see (i'm very short). if that's the case, that makes me feel sick thinking about it too. my husband said that wearing layers and layers may help with that. but, you'd probably end up getting a pat down instead.

pretty in pink, the screeners that everyone walks through are just metal detectors. the other machines are only for certain people who get pulled aside and the put you in a box and x-ray you. i've never had it done to me but i've seen it done to other people.

I also thought so. Actually I've never opted for the 'pat down' because as has been said, the security guys often look at it as a bother, so they tend to be rougher and unfriendly. I would never want to go through the x-ray either. As prettyinpink has said, it is much better to arrive early and avoid the last minute rush.
