Destination Weddings, how to tell family

i have not decided if i am going to have a destination weddings, but i brought it up and some of my family members were not on board with it. how can i convince my family that it might be a good idea?

i guess it depends on how close you are to your family, and how much you care if they go or not. ultimately it is up to you and what is going to make you happy. i personally wouldn't care as long as my parents can go.

we are having a bit of this with my fiance's family right now. he has a very large, very extended family and traditionally everybody (300+) attends every wedding. they did not understand why we were taking this opportunity away from them (as they saw it), until we explained that it was our way of going back to his dominican roots by having the wedding on the island. they have calmed down somewhat although they will probably still be unhappy for a while.

I have a good relationship with my family, however I would still not feel obliged to convince them of anything. It's my wedding and my choice, and they are supposed to respect that and be happy for me. I don't recall being able to choose for them, so why should they get to choose for me?

We had a destination wedding and one way that we appeased the family that could not attend was to have a big party/reception when we got back home. We still has a few that were upset, but it was what WE wanted.

This is what we are planning. We know not everyone will be able to travel with us to our destination wedding, and some frankly cannot afford it, which we totally understand. We will be doing a reception after we get home to invite a larger group of people to celebrate our wedding with us back at home.

As for "how to tell the family" about our destination wedding... Well for us all our close family pretty much know, they have heard us discussing and planning for weeks now Some people wont know until they get their RSVP / save the date from us, but, we are hoping to plan well in advance so people have enough time to decide if they are able to join us or not.

We had an engagement party, but did it as a Mexican theme... tacos, margaritas, tequila, etc. We made a photo slide show of our family and friends and put little sombrero hats on them (did it in canva.) At the end of the slideshow, we then announced it would be in Mexico. Was pretty fun!
